Keep an eye out for these plant-based, natural anti-aging superstars
Foolproof anti-aging skin care is all about the ingredients. When it comes to aging gracefully, confidently, and effectively, plant-based formulas that are only steps away from their original states are truly the most skin-loving option. We know that mature skin isn’t just one concern or one isolated issue: it’s the overall effect of specific wrinkle-prone areas around the eyes and mouth, dullness, hyperpigmentation or discoloration, and a general...falling effect. We get that there are many moving parts: because of this, we don’t prescribe a miracle, big-hammer product that will take years off your face in seconds. It’s all about smart combinations, targeted treatments, prevention, and healing.
This fall, we’ve amped up the 100% PURE anti-aging routine with a few incredible new products that we’re more-than-a-little glowing about (it’s not a coincidence that we’re glowing, surrounded by these products all day). We’re super proud to give a sneak peek of two new eye creams: our Retinol PM Eye Cream and Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream. Susie Wang has formulated both of these ultra concentrated eye creams to represent cutting edge and effective plant-based anti-aging chemistry, and they’ll be must-haves for incorporating into your daily skin care regimen.
So where do these new products fit in? And what in the world are we talking about when we say “plant-based anti-aging chemistry?” Let’s dive into a mini-lesson on eight of our favorite anti-aging allstars - keep a lookout for these on ingredient lists if gently nudging back the clock is on your cosmetic agenda.
Pomegranate has a powerful set of anti-aging properties, which just might be the contributing factor for the serious buzz surrounding this tasty little fruit. Recent studies are showing that chemicals in the fruit’s flesh prompt the production of a molecule called urolithin A, which is key for enabling muscle cells from degenerating. Authors of a study published in the science journal Nature Medicine are finding enormous potential in its anti-aging benefits: "The nutritional approach opens up territory that traditional pharma has never explored. It's a true shift in the scientific paradigm," says Johan Auwerx, a researcher and author of the study.
This innovation is definitely exciting, and builds on the already established track record of pomegranate: it’s referred to as the “anti-aging queen” because of its high vitamin C content and remarkable level of punicic acid: an Omega-5 fatty acid that helps skin hold onto collagen (aka expect plumper, more youthful skin). Because of it’s overachiever profile, we’ve incorporated it into our new Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream, and it’s also a star player in our Pomegranate Oil Anti-Aging Lipstick and Healthy Foundation: both makeup collections work double duty as powerful anti-aging skin treatments and top performing cosmetics. If you look closely at our ingredient lists, you’ll see that we sneak anti-aging pomegranate into the majority of our natural skin care and Fruit Pigmented® cosmetics -- now you know why!
Coffee oil is one of our favorite anti-aging tools, thanks to its high concentration of essential fatty acids, sterols, and vitamin E. This trifecta makes it a potent antioxidant that can offer protection against UV damage and its associated cellular degradations. These antioxidant properties have been discussed in quite a few studies – if you’re a keen student and want more science, take a peek at this article in the Medical Science Monitor, for a blow-by-blow breakdown of the antioxidant properties of caffeine.
The gist of coffee’s anti-aging wrap? Photoaging is one of the major culprits behind mature looking skin, and coffee oil can assist in preventing it through supporting strong and flexible skin tissue reproduction at the cellular level. Caffeine oil is also an ultra effective solution to one of the more annoying beauty woes out there: under-eye puffiness. With it’s capacity to speed up fluid drainage and anti-inflammatory properties, we’ve featured it in our upcoming Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream and it’s the star ingredient in our beloved Coffee Bean Eye Cream and Caffeine Mask (so you can fool people into thinking you got a full night sleep).
Retinol. You’ve all heard of it, and probably know that it has a practically mythical status in the anti-aging world. Retinol is known to work at a molecular level: it’s a compound in the Vitamin A family that chemically exfoliates your skin through speeding up cell turnover. What this means: it effectively removes dead skin cells and buildup in pores that cause dullness and a lifeless complexion. Super helpful for smoothing texture and gradually sloughing off hyperpigmentation from scarring or sun exposure, retinol is an essential ingredient for achieving a dewy, fresh-faced look. At 100% PURE, we derive our retinol from vitamin A and carrot seed oil: fantastic natural retinol sources with major buffing power. You can find naturally derived retinol in our Retinol Overnight Balm, Retinol Restorative Neck Cream, and our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream.
For incredible skin soothing, enhanced hydration and suppleness, Vitamin E is an essential ingredient that functions as both a nutrient and an antioxidant. Vitamin E eases dryness by helping skin retain its natural moisture levels and when applied regularly, is effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines and early-stage wrinkles. Its inherent antioxidant status means that it blocks free radicals; we like to think of it as the first line of defense against damaging environmental effects. As part of a moisturizing skin care regimen, it works as a daily therapy to seal in moisture and protect the outermost skin layer. It’s a central ingredient in several of our most nourishing lines: our body butters and creams, and of course our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream formula, which makes use of its hydrating properties to specifically target dryness and irritation in the delicate eye area.
Phaseolus Radiatus Meristem Cell Culture Extract
You may recognize Phaseolus Radiatus by its common name: the small and unassuming Mung Bean. This extract is a cutting-edge ingredient that’s shown an incredible capacity to increase skin cell activity and accelerate the synthesis of new cellular proteins. The stem cells sprouted from mung beans possess the unique characteristic of self regeneration – by using Phaseolus Radiatus Meristem cell culture extract, we’ve harnessed its regenerative and reprogramming property to work at your skin’s cellular level to repair UV-damaged fibroblasts and reduce photo-induced inflammation. The result is a targeted reduction and slowing of elasticity loss, and increased skin firmness and density. In other words, this ingredient has serious potential to pump the breaks on the “falling effect” that kicks in when we get older. We’ve included it as a key ingredient in our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream, for targeted lifting and firming around your peepers.
Also featured in our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream, Pentapeptide-48 is a biologically active peptide that supports stem cell regeneration in skin and stimulates the production of elastin. It improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, over time producing noticeably enhanced skin firmness and volume. Peptides are amino acids integral to the processes of cellular communication, protein regulation, and cell proliferation. Their anti-aging properties have been cited in numerous trusted studies; one study, titled Topical Peptide Treatments with Effective Anti-Aging Results included in the peer reviewed Cosmetics Journal, gives a breakdown of the peptide-anti-aging correlation: “research and industry has developed many short, stable, and synthetic peptides that have a role in extracellular matrix synthesis, pigmentation, innate immunity and inflammation. These peptides are used for collagen stimulation, wound healing, ‘Botox-like’ wrinkle smoothing, as well as antioxidative, antimicrobial , and whitening effects”. In our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream, Pentapeptide-48 supports these regenerative processes with truly notable effects.
Included in our new Multi-Vitamin PM Serum, niacinamide is a must-have in any anti-aging regimen (which explains why Byrdie has this PM serum at the top of their beauty wish-list). It boosts the immunity of your skin by increasing the production of ceramides, an essential component of the epidermal lipid barrier that helps your skin retain moisture and protect itself from environmental pollutants. Exposure to the sun can strip and damage this natural barrier, so supplementing your routine with ceramide-producing topicals (namely, products that contain niacinamide) is a key strategy for re-strengthening damaged skin and preventing moisture loss (and keeping out invading microbes). An improved epidermal lipid barrier also means less redness, blotchiness, and sensitivity – all results of a weakened lipid barrier. Applied nightly in our super concentrated serum formula, niacinamide works to strengthen and fortify your skin structure over time for overall better pH balance, sebum production, and generally reduced crankiness over sensitive spots in skin!
O vitamin C, how we love thee... let us count the ways! Chances are, you’ve read a few of our past posts on vitamin C, and can safely make the assumption that we’re perpetually floored by this seemingly run-of-the-mill cold-buster. We’ll never stop singing its praises! Included in our Multi-Vitamin Potent PM Serum, best-selling Vitamin C Serum, and Multi-Vitamin Cream, vitamin C is renowned as a powerful piece of the anti-aging puzzle. It boasts a range of skin benefits: from brightening to improved hydration and increased firmness. It’s a powerful antioxidant that works as a “free-radical scavenger,” fighting off damage caused by the toxins accumulated during everyday life. It’s especially effective when it comes to fighting off photo-damage from sun exposure, and when applied topically can also reduce and fade discoloration from past days at the beach. It’s also an essential vitamin for the synthesis of collagen (it’s integral to the production of the precursor to collagen: procollagen). Without vitamin C, the process of collagen restoration would be impossible. Three cheers for this little guy!
We’re committed to keeping you in the loop about our latest ingredient research, and making sure you’re getting as excited as we are about new innovations in plant based skin care cosmetics. Stay tuned for our upcoming Retinol PM Eye Cream and Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream, which combine a bunch of exciting anti-aging ingredients into two small, but powerful packages!
