What causes blotchy skin? For some of us, this is a rare occurrence usually as a result of sun exposure, allergies or stress. For many, blotchy skin occurs on an ongoing basis, covering not just the face but parts of the body. Blotchy skin can be related to certain skin conditions including eczema and rosacea, but for many their blotchy skin cause remains a mystery.

There’s no reason why you can’t have answers, and be on the path to a smoother skin complexion! Here we’ll share our Blotchy Skin 101 and provide tips and best practices. On how to clear up blotchiness for a more even skin appearance.

What Causes Blotchy Skin?

Some of the most common causes of blotchy skin might be hiding right under your nose. One major cause could be using products that are too harsh - so step one should be choosing products with natural, gentle ingredients. Choosing sensitive skin products may be the first step in your battle against blotchy skin, but there are a few other tips that can help.

These are the top offending causes of blotchy skin, along with recommended products for helping your skin survive them!

Steamy Shower Extreme heat or weather conditions

A major culprit, which can be blamed for blotchy skin, is extreme heat and weather conditions. Too-hot showers and excess sun exposure are at the top of this list, since we can control these on a daily basis. We too love nothing more than a hot shower after an exhausting day, or spending a warm, clear day laid out on a towel in the bright sunshine. But while our bodies certainly need the relaxation and benefits of sun-sourced vitamin D, too much of each is harmful for blotchy skin. Excess sun and harmful UV rays can not only cause instant blotchiness with skin, but can lead to long term damage, aging, and of course skin cancer.

More than just excess sunshine, extreme weather in general including but not limited to icy cold winds, high elevation and very humid weather can result in uneven looking skin. Protect your skin to give it a fighting chance against the elements by always adding and SPF under makeup or onto exposed skin. If you know you are prone to blotchy skin, be sure to add an additional protective layer like a scarf, umbrella, hat and/or sunnies to shield even more of yourself from what is sure to cause a negative skin reaction.

Product Recommendation: Yerba Mate Mist SPF 30

Cover skin with lightweight healthy concept SPF that includes some of the same ingredients that might be in your prized skincare collection meaning it is sure to instantly work well with your skin. In addition to active ingredient zinc useful for screening harmful sun rays, this featherweight mist contains jojoba for skin conditioning and further protection and highlight ingredient yerba mate. While this ingredient seems to fly under the radar in the skincare world, it is influential in this SPF because it contains vitamins A and C. We all know vitamin C as the brightening superstar of the vitamin world, and it does just that in this mist while also boosting collagen production in the skin. While vitamin C deserves a round of applause for all the #werk it is putting in here, vitamin A is also very impactful for anti-aging with regards to skin cell turnover for new, less blotchy and scarred skin faster.

Argan Water Bomb Physical or emotional stress

We all know that stress shows on the skin first (and in our weight second!) so be mindful that worrying over that hormonal breakout or uneven rash will only make it worse. Keep these to a minimum with a surprising addition to your beauty arsenal that is as multi-purpose as it is luxurious.

Product Recommendation: Argan Oil

This raw oil is rich and silky, but not too heavy for daytime wear. It’s a perfect sensitive skin product for redness! Since it does not irritate the skin, it is a great soothing addition when you are suffering a blotch or blemish. A bonus is that you can add a drop into your palm and blend with foundations or your SPF, then finish up your evening skin care routine with a bit more to seal in the nutrients in your skin care.

Poor skin maintenance

We’ve all been there. It’s the start of the year and you’re trying to manage everything; maybe it’s a new role at work, a new workout routine that is kicking your butt and a new diet that isn’t exactly 100% satisfying. And all of those efforts mean that you’re paying in less energy to focus on your skin. Soon you’ll notice less consistency in your skin tone and more blemishes popping up. Don’t worry! This blotchiness is certainly temporary. Here’s what we use to quell a rough patch of dry, uneven skin.

Product Recommendation: Green Tea Water Bomb Mask

This mask will definitely get a giggle out of you if you glance at your reflection while wearing it, but the benefits are no joke. The green tea in this mask is antioxidant rich which means it is naturally anti-inflammatory and helps to protect from sun and environmental damage. Combined with soothing aloe and super hydrating hyaluronic acid, this mask will have you looking and feeling refreshed and renewed.

Aloe Allergies and new or existing skin conditions

If you are already living with blotchy skin as a result of a skin condition like rosacea or an unknown allergy, first simplify your cosmetic routine. This means using more natural, wholesome ingredients, less of those that clog your skin and going with lighter makeup.

Product Recommendation: BB Cream

Why do we recommend this as your new favorite foundation? This beauty balm is light and feels weightless on the skin. The foundation contains SPF, so while you’re having fun you’re still protecting from the sun. Finally, this foundation has a hydrating and healthy aloe base to nourish your skin all throughout wear.

*Need a little more coverage than a BB cream usually provides? Add a green color corrector to stubborn spots under your foundation for an even more seamless finish.

Alcohol consumption

One thing that you can probably guess causes blotchy skin are spirits and adult beverages. While that single glass of red wine with your daily evening dinner may be doing your heart and blood well, it is doing nothing for your skin. Alcohol can cause increased blood flow which will increase the appearance of redness but also can introduce toxins into the body that aren’t beneficial for clear, even skin.

Product Recommendation: Does It All Sheet Mask

This mask is a quick fix to a night of fun with unexpected consequences (no we don’t mean those accidental tipsy texts to your ex). This mask contains some of the ingredients we mentioned above like vitamins A and C, but it also contains some other helpful heroes like aloe, chamomile and rose. These ingredients will have an immediate soothing and smoothing effect, so if your blotchy skin is caused by the sauce, enjoy a clearer complexion in 20 minutes or less.
